in the short story 'The Ace of Diamonds Gang' by Owen Marshall symbos have been used to represent different ideas. the symbos used are the Ace of Diamonds and the librar card. the Ace of Diamonds represents boyhood and fantasy. the library card symbolises adolescence and reality.

the first symbol used is the Ace of Diamonds. the gang wear it on their mask and on their calling card. it represents fantasy and as soon as these kids put the mask on it brings them into a fantasy world. the ace of diamonds represents anonymity, mistique and danger. the narrator uses the gang as a life warp to escape from being a 13 year od in a provincial town. the members become 'wraiths' and 'sentinels' in the night when they stand as the ace of diamonds gang. this gang compares themselves to other famous groups and gangs such as the Jacobites and the Black Hand. the ace of diamonds represents fantasy, the ace of diamonds is boyhood.

the second symbol used is the library card which comes into the stroy when the narrator pins it to jorgessons door instead of the ace of diamonds. the library caard brings everything back into reality, and marks the end of childhood. it was 'the end of free imagination and of boyhood perhaps'. this card shows the narrators smart, geeky, honest and well behaved. these things are the complete opposite to what the ace of diamonds stands for, integrity, danger and courage. the library card brings fantasy back into context when it is pinned to jorgessons door. it shows that the gang arent untouchable. their anonymity is lost as well as boyhood, it takes a library card of things to show this.

in 'the ace of diamonds gang'  Marshall uses these two main symbols to represent two main ideas. the ace of diamonds which represents the narrators boyhood, and its all fantasy. all this fantasyand childhood is brought to an end by the library card, the simple, honest, ordinary library card. there is irony in the fact that the notorious ace of diamonds gang was brought to an end by the careless misplacement of a library card.

the second important idea used was the difference in understanding between
parents and teenagers. the parents in this story shared a completely different
view on how the dance was going to be. the dont understand its importance
to their son. the mother in particular brushed the importance aside and
thought of a cheap costume that was easy for her to make. she thought it was
going to be some kids thing. she didnt really care what the costume was as
long as it suited her. her son on the other hand needed a good costume in
order to keep his new found sexual preferment alive. if his costume was
bad his image in the eyes of girls would be reflected by the costume.the
symbol represents the diferent understanding between parents and their kids.
they thought the dance would be some kids thing, not knowing that the paper
parcel was the end of their sons new found power, the power of sexual preferment.
